Newmarket Golf Club host Captains’ Charity Week in aid of GeeWizz Charity and Tilly’s Tractor Golf Captains, Naomi Pilmer and Mike Panes had to cancel their main fundraising day, back in May, due to the coronavirus pandemic. So, instead they hosted the Captains’ Charity Week, which raised a wonderful £6,800 for their two chosen charities. Throughout the seven days, they had just over 500 entries across each competition. As well as the competitions, a silent auction was also organised with a host of lots donated by local businesses, members, supporters and neighbouring golf clubs. Lots include: a morning with Newmarket trainer Rae Guest and breeches signed by jockeys including Frankel’s rider Tom Queally and Adam Kirby, along with paintings, jewellery, signed books and dining experiences. The funds kindly raised will go towards an inspirational Isobel Sheppard, aged 13. Isobel was diagnosed with a rare cancer and is determined not to let it stop her living life to the full. She was told in January she had a synovial sarcoma in her groin after a painful swelling appeared at the top of her leg. Her parents Samantha and Elliott initially thought she had sustained an injury when mountain biking with her dad but after a trip to the GP, it became clear that the problem was much more serious. Isobel started chemotherapy in February and May. She underwent almost five hours of surgery to amputate her leg after the doctors said it was the only way to remove the tumour. Within three days Isobel was up and trying to walk. It never occurred to her that she couldn’t do it. Funds raised will go towards helping Isobel and her family to go to London for an overnight stay and theatre show in early 2021, in the hope of giving Isobel something to look forward to.
